Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum

One of Singapore’s Cultural Landmarks

Located in the heart of Singapore’s Chinatown, the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum is a cultural landmark. The temple houses the Sacred Buddha Tooth Relic in an awe-inspiring stupa made up of over four hundred kilograms of gold. It is believed that the Tooth Relic was discovered in an ancient stupa in Myanmar in 1980. Also found here are a number of ancient manuscripts, artefacts and other objects related to Buddhism. The temple is one of the most widely visited sites in Chinatown, and tourists in the vicinity should consider dropping by for a quick tour.

The temple was founded by the venerable Shi Fa Zhao in 2002, and was dedicated to Maitreya Buddha, also known as the ‘Buddha of the Future’. Costing over USD 60 million, the temple was finally declared open in 2007. The building was heavily inspired by the architectural styles of the Tang Dynasty offering visitors a truly fascinating experience. Visitors enter the complex through the South Bridge Road. After crossing the ‘Mountain Gate’ one will enter a quiet courtyard which stands in stark contrast to bustling Chinatown. A Drum Tower is located to the left of the courtyard with a corresponding Bell Tower located to the right.

The entrance into the temple consists of three doors, and is made up of ‘Balau’ timber. From there visitors can explore most of the rooms inside. Filled with intricate carvings and artefacts, there is much to see. The inner chamber is opened to the public for viewing every day but at specific times, and visitors will get a chance to witness the ancient Tooth Relic. Simple vegetarian food is served in the temple basement; the food is free but donations are always welcome.
