Sentosa Attractions

Billed as Asia’s favorite playground Sentosa (meaning peace and tranquility in Malay) attracts five million visitors a year. The development of this little five square kilometer island into the famous resort of today has been taking place since 1972 with the name change of the island and S$ 420 million of private capital and S$ 500 million of government capital invested in the project. Just half a kilometer away from the main island of Singapore and linked by a short causeway, a cable car and the Sentosa Express monorail, it is conveniently close for visitor and locals alike to take time off at whatever time of day to enjoy Sentos’a many attractions which have been continuously upgraded to appeal to a wider audience.

The resort comprises of the main areas of Imbiah Lookout, Siloso Point, the beaches, golf course and Resort World Sentosa within which are varied sites, activities and leisure facilities to suit varied age groups and interests. Tiger Sky Tower near the cable car, is Asia’s tallest observation tower where at 131 m above sea level visitor are offered 360 degree views of the surrounding area, Singapore and the southern islands and on clear days even all the way up to the outer islands of Indonesia and Malaysia.

Dolphin Lagoon at Siloso Point affords the opportunity to interact with pink hued humped back Pacific Dolphins. Visitors can also enjoy the dolphin shows. Fort Siloso near the underwater world offers an insight into a bit of Singapore’s history with a display of artillery used in World War II for the defense of Singapore by the British. Underwater World near Siloso Beach has long been a family attraction. Housing 2,500 marine and fresh water animals of 250 species it is said to be Asia’s largest oceanarium. An 83 m travelator moves visitors along a submerged glass tunnel with windows.

The Butterfly Park and Insect kingdom has 15,000 and 3,000 species respectively and the butterflies range from the tinniest specimens to 150 mm. Sentosa 4D Magix is South East Asia’s first such theater, with motion based chairs and 3D vision giving a realistic feel to movies screened there. Sentosa Cine Blast, a cinema ride that features a high definition wide screen projector and a six axis motion system that takes visitors on a log ride accompanied by much screaming.

Other attractions include the Megazip Adventure Park with the longest and steepest zip wires in Asia, the Azzura Beach Club a two level dining, entertainment and hydro sports facility and the Flying Fox with a flying fox simulation. For golf aficionados there is the Sentosa Golf Club’s eighteen hole scenic and challenging championship golf course, playing on which is an experience to treasure. For those wishing to take a break from all the activity there is 3 km of white sandy beach where visitors can relax and unwind.

Resort World Sentosa occupying 49 ha is the biggest draw on the island complete with a 24 hour casino, Universal Studios Singapore. Divided into seven zones; Sci Fi City, Ancient Egypt, New York, Lost World, Far Far Away, Hollywood and Madagascar all with their own exciting rides and Voyage de la Vie, a circus theater spectacular about a boy’s journey to seek the meaning of life all told in song and dance. This show presents a cast of circus stars brought from 16 different countries. With its own hotels, restaurants, luxury shopping mall and spa it is a destination in itself and a lifestyle venue.
