Jurong Bird Park, a delight for bird lovers

The bird lover visiting Singapore should definitely take the opportunity to explore the delightful Jurong Bird Park which is reputed to be one of the finest avian zoos in the world. Jurong Bird Park which opened its doors to the public in 1971 has the distinction of being the largest avian park in the world in terms of the number of resident birds, with more than 5,000 individuals to be found within the park. About 400 different species of birds are represented within the park, of which 29 are considered to be endangered species.

Jurong Bird Park is an outstanding avian sanctuary, featuring meticulously landscaped grounds and some of the most expansive free flight aviaries on the globe. You will find a number of aviaries within the park, each constructed to simulate the natural environment of the birds it contains.

The Waterfall Aviary is a major attraction, being a vast enclosure that contains more than 600 individual birds. It also features a 30 m tall waterfall, in addition to more than 100 varieties of plants that form a suitable habitat for the birds. Here you will see rare varieties like the crested guinea fowl, turaco, iridescent starling and roller.

Another favourite with visitors is the Lory Loft which as its name suggests is an aviary for the very friendly lories and their cousins, the lorikeets. Meanwhile Jungle Jewels is a recreation of a South American rainforest environment where you will see such attractions as the toucan, red-crested cardinal and tanager. You will also see many other attractions at this fascinating park, including special aviaries for flamingos, pelicans and penguins. Another engrossing attraction at the park is the Breeding and Research Centre where visitors will be able to gain a fascinating insight into the incubation process and special care of chicks.
