Singapore National Museum

A Unique Historical Perspective

The Singapore National Museum is the oldest museum in Singapore and the origins of this grand structure goes back to the year 1849. Located on Stamford Road at the Museum Planning Area, this is also one of the only four museums in the nation.

Opened under the name Raffles Library and Museum by the then Singapore Institution Committee, the library was part of an establishment of a public repository of knowledge of Malayan in a museum, school and library. Originally it housed items of historical and archaeological value within it while the museum revamped itself over the years to portray nation-building as well as the history of Singapore and now exhibits artefacts pertaining to the ethnology and arts of the country and of the region. Much of the nation’s most cherished treasures dating back to the 14th century can be found here while its collection of precious artefacts and books just keep on growing by the day. The Singapore National Museum is indeed the pride of the nation and is the best place to discover more and more about this fascinating nation as the museum exhibits all that makes Singapore within its walls streaked with many years of history.

The building itself is magnificent in its making. A true icon in Singaporean architecture, the museum is topped off by a splendid dome while the newly added glass passage integrates the old with the new. This glass passage itself is 11 metres high and is world’s largest outdoor self-supporting glass structures ever constructed in history. Made entirely out of glass, this structure allows the visitors a mesmerizing view of the old building, giving the sensation of viewing the old 19th Century neo-Palladian architecture in an art gallery setting.

The rotunda dome that completes the building was restored to its present glory with picturesque stained glass panes is truly a sight to marvel at. One can simply get lost within the architectural marvels of the building itself without getting to the many wonders that the structure preserves within its womb.

Finding Singapore hotel accommodation while visiting the museum would not be an issue since Studio M Hotel Singapore is a Singapore hotel that is located quite nearby, all geared up to provide its guests with all the amenities that the modern world has conjured up for the convenience of humankind.
