Peranakan Trail with Food Tasting

Hot and Spicy

Though Singapore is small in size geographically speaking, it is apparent that in most other senses it has well surpassed expectations. May it be education, entertainment, shopping or business, Singapore is well geared to take on the world and through the Peranakan Food Festival it seems Singapore has conquered the world of culinary arts as well.
Peranakans are Chinese immigrants who settled down in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia during the colonial era. They were considered the elite of the population and the ladies were referred to as ‘Nyonyas’ and the gentlemen were called ‘Babas’. Their unique lifestyles fused with local rituals are portrayed to the world at the Peranakan Trail, which is essentially a display of their identity.

The exhibition draws crowds from all over Singapore who wish to taste the inimitable delicacies of the Nyonyas and Babas, whilst appreciating the rich cultural background they come from. The furniture, apparels, jewellery, embroidery, porcelain and ornaments that are for sale are well worth the price paid for them. The food is spicy and full of herbs and other natural flavours. Usually the Peranakan Trail includes a tour of the former Botanical Gardens which have now been converted to a Spice Garden. This contains the numerous varieties of spices that are used by the nyonyas to concoct the delicious dishes that are available for tasting. This opportunity should not be missed as it is somewhat difficult to come across the authentic cuisine of the Peranakans outside the food festival. You will  be guided around the entire exhibition and the fine comestibles should be tasted bit by bit. The tour will not conclude without the guide showing off the ostentatious architecture of early 20th century shop houses, which are used by the Peranakans.
It is likely that getting a Singapore hotel reservation becomes tedious during this season, hence, it is best to book early and opt for a Singapore city centre hotel so that you have easy access to most central locations, including the Food Festival. The Copthorne King’s Hotel Singapore is a prominent hotel that ensures a memorable holiday experience for all.
