Sultan Mosque and Its Surroundings

An Awe Inspiring Attraction

Located in the Malay Heritage District, Sultan Mosque is a glorious site lying amidst a series of old shop houses. An incarnation of the ethnic and cultural diversity of Singapore, it is the prominent landmark in Kampong Glam. Named after Sultan Hussein Shah, this is the national mosque of the Muslim community in Singapore. The original building of the mosque was replaced by a new one in 1928.

Oriented in the direction of Mecca, the compound is encircled by a boundary wall made of cast-iron railings. Sprawling across an area of 4,109 square metres, the mosque was designed by Denis Santry of Swan & MacLaren. With an architectural style influenced by Indo-Saracenic style, it was declared a national monument in 1975.

However its two gold onion-shaped domes above the west and east façades are considered as the most striking features. Each dome is topped with stars and crescent moons. Glass bottle ends which are said to have been donated to Sultan by poor Muslims adorn the base of each dome. Merlon cresting frames the roof parapet. Minarets with staircases can be found at both corners of the compound. One should ascend these staircases to reach the calling towers which feature balconies.

The entrance to the mausoleum of Tunku Alam is in the west facade overlooking the North Bridge Road. The east facade is flanked by two eight-storey minarets. The central atrium of the mosque’s prayer hall can hold up to 5,000 devotees.

Events of historical significance were held at the mosque. Through the course of time, it has been a focal point for religious, social and cultural activities. A vibrant night market takes place here during the month of Ramadan. Hordes of Muslims flock to its vicinity during this period to await the prayer permitting them to break their fast.
